Susan “Suze” Heydt’s first thought was makeup, when a professor of her Master’s Program for Counseling Psychology at Boston College asked the class, “How did you ‘play’ when you were 12 years-old? What did you do for ‘fun’ when there were no restrictions?” Having been around the field earlier, during her 20’s modeling with Ford Agency in Chicago, the awakening to pursue the art of makeup began. Earning her graduate degree and switching gears away from being a PhD candidate to makeup expert, she married and started raising children. Thanks to reading that J.K. Rowling wrote while her children napped, Suze was inspired to contact a local Fashion Editor, while her own children slept, to take a chance on her doing makeup for the magazine.
Suze arrived as a makeup artist during the heyday of DC’s trendy appeal garnering the support of her agent, Lynda Erkiletian, founder of www.theartistagency.com. Getting the cover of Esquire, shot by Platon, the Avedon of our times launched Suze’s breakout role as Celebrity Makeup Artist. With her craft of creating a natural look and comfortable demeanor on the job in high demand, Suze’s work graces the covers and pages of Vanity Fair, Elle, GQ, Glamour, TIME, Newsweek, New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker as well as many others.
In 2008, the media industry’s turn to a predominately online presence coincided with her meteoric rise painting the faces of celebrity clients including Emma Roberts, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Olsen, Heather Graham, America Ferrera, Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, and Matthew Goode, as well as, Oscar winners Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Kevin Spacey, Tilda Swinton, Robin Williams, Ellen Burstyn, Diablo Cody and Katheryn Bigelow. Politicians, which are too many to name here, include Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
Influenced by her work alongside a list of the world’s top photographers comprising Mark Seliger, Martin Schoeller, and Brigitte Lacombe plus fashion pioneers including Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, Suze is fueled by the interesting people she has access to in the internationally powerful elite, who work and visit Washington D.C. With her experience of over 20 years in the industry, Suze savors the moments when sharing the “fun” with the clients from her community–embracing moms and their daughters, brides, and friends wanting to master the art of beautiful makeup. The private location of her former studio on Main Street and of the aspect of writing about the colorful lives of celebrities in www.makingupamerica.com grounds her to recognize the importance of empowering people.
